Interests and Activities
Age Groups
The club's leadership is focused on attracting, involving and keeping members of all ages. It would help that effort if you provided your approximate age. Fudge a little if you prefer, but get us in the ballpark. Pick the age closest to yours, up or down.
Volunteering
Many of the functions at the club are dependent upon volunteers to exist. Volunteering to help run them is by far the best and easiest way to create your circle of friends at the club; many members have met their best friends through this volunteering. And many consider this volunteer work as much fun as officially fun activities.
All this work is based on committees and events. The following are brief descriptions of many of them.
(Some very large subcommittees with heavy volunteer needs are also listed. Committees that are hand picked, elected or otherwise hard to join are not listed -the Board, Membership, Nominating, Long Range Planning, Land Development )
Bermuda Ocean Race:
This committee organizes and runs the biannual race from Annapolis to Bermuda (2008, 2010, etc.). Almost all the work is organizational, planning, and education, mostly in the year preceding the race. Committee members tend to be people who have or want to participate in the race in their own boats or the boats of friends.
Building and Grounds
(aka Fools with Tools) Keeps the clubhouse and grounds shipshape -- carpentry, plumbing, planning, general building skills needed. TIME NEEDED: Occasional -- often scheduled as a weekend "workday", sometimes it's do-it-yourself, depending on interests and skills.
There are several functions under this umbrella: the weekly news email (E-Blast), the monthly newsletter (VFB - View from the Bridge), and the annual Directory.
Cruise Committee
Plans and participates in cruises from early spring through fall. Lots of themes. Lots of fun. Also does winter pot-luck suppers. Committee members tend to be those with cruising boats (sail or power), or those friends of those people who get taken along
Finance Committee
If you're interested in debits, credits, and other financial wizardry, tell the chairman of the Finance Committee about your interest. Limited Membership & must be a voting member to be on this committee.
House Committee
Runs all events held at the club and invents new ones all the time. In addition to many parties for the adults, events include Winter Wednesday darts night, several events for small kids. TIME NEEDED: Monthly meetings and participation in the events of your choice. If you can't make meetings, but can help as needed, that's fine too.
Junior Committee
If you have children who are interested in sailing, check here. Their interest can be either in racing or sailing in general. Just let us know.
Leukemia Cup
This is the original Leukemia Cup, a regatta run for the benefit of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Running the racing is simple, but there is much fundraising and a big party, auction, etc.
Lights Parade
Major EYC event during the December holiday season. Meetings are year-round, but grow more intense and frequent as December approaches. TIME NEEDED: Monthly meetings, starting in January. Additional meetings as needed depending on sub-committee involvement.
Marina Committee
Keeps the marina shipshape -- carpentry, planning, and building skills needed. TIME NEEDED: Occasional, usually part of a weekend "workday".
Melges 24 Worlds in 2009
Organizing the World Championships for the Melges 24 Class in Oct-Nov 2009. On the water and on-shore work.
Outfitters
Sells and displays EYC's quality, fun, hip, hot merchandise & accessories. This is a great way to meet your fellow members!! TIME NEEDED: Monthly meetings, various selling times.
Office Assistance
There is no official committee with this name, but several informal groups that help the office staff
Race Committee
Plans and runs races and regattas beginning in April and ending in November. On the water race committee work, and on shore regatta organizing work, including the inevitable party. Will train, no experience necessary. TIME NEEDED: Monthly meeting optional. Pick the weekend races on which you want to work. Can volunteer for as many races events as your time permits.
Santa Maria Cup
The Santa Maria Cup is an international women's Match Racing regatta. Held in late May-early June, it draws teams for the US, Europe, Australia and South America. The regatta team has a sub-groups that handles the racing, boat management (boats are borrowed, and match racing takes many support boats), and shore arrangements including housing and parties.
Solomon's Island Regatta
This group runs (in mid July) a major EYC, the overnight race from EYC to Solomon's Island, getting there in time for the Screwpile regatta. This committee manages the race committee aspects with the regular "race committee", handles the arrangement in Solomon's, and throws a major party at EYC a week or two after the race.
Special Events
Organizes EYC's large fundraising parties to which the public is invited, such as the Spring Cotillion and Boat Show Bash, and some large EYC parties such as the Commodore's Ball. TIME NEEDED: Monthly meetings with socializing afterwards, and subcommittee meetings (as needed) by event. A group of fun members and waitlisters planning fun for all!.
Technology/Web Committee
This is a newly reconstituted committee, and it is migrating the current (5/2008) website to a new structure. This will be followed with more web based applications, and tying the web site to other IT elements at the club. They need technical people with the time to work on this.
Volunteer and Member Information
This group, under several names, has been doing surveying of the committees and the members, and is the general source of quantified knowledge about the membership. In 2008 it is also focusing of the dynamics of volunteerism at the club.
EYC Foundation
Not a part of EYC, but a charitable organization originally extablished by the club. The Eastport Yacht CLub Foundation is a charitable and educational foundation where boating, education, community and environmental awareness come together. Its programs include: Oyster Kids, a hands-on program for local elementary schoold .children that teaches about the state of the Bay and the valuable work .that oysters do in reducing polution; funding classes in English .proficiency for a number of non-native speakers in the community; .Boatbuilding by the Bay, helping kids at risk learn to build wooden .canoes which they use on the Bay; and funding scholarships for .low-income kids to learn to sail in the EYC summer program
